It’s been quite some time since we’ve had ourselves a session with Inquisitor Makhell. So much time, in fact, that the interrogations coming over the next few weeks have been sat stewing for some months – my apologies. With that in mind, I’ll jump straight to the nuts and bolts of this dragon savvy author. Ladies and gents, I give you the tortured ramblings of Michael R. Miller:
- If I gave you an elk, where would you hide it?
“With my secret pet elephant, polar bear and red panda. Can’t say where or some relevant authority is likely to come and reclaim them.“
- Why would you be hiding it? Weird.
“As I say, the powers to be would come looking for my secret large/rare animal stash. I’ve got enough black marks on my record without adding ‘elk thief’ to the list.“
- Tell us something about your work in progress?
“I’m working on book 3 in the Dragon’s Blade Trilogy. It’s the one where I get to start dropping all the plates I’ve been spinning over the last two books. Hoping they’ll fall with a climatically loud, reverberating smash.“
- If you were a tree, what tree would you be and why?
“A pear tree. I’m fond of pears.“
- Were you an avid reader as a kid?
“I was an avid gamer kid and history boy who read a lot as a by-product of those things. I think I’ve listened to more books than I’ve read, or near enough an equal number. I grew up on Stephen Fry narrating Harry Potter so that was a high quality gateway drug.”
- Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?
“You gotta do both in this life. I feel I’ve got the hunter instincts as I can be very dogged in pursuit of something once I’ve set my sights on it.“
- You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What colour would you be and why?
“I would be the colour of Scotland (bear with me). As the crayon slides across the paper, it would leave in its wake a blue trail which streaks in every conceivable shade; little white x’s would pepper the trail at random and the crayon, when smelled, would be that of thistle on a summer’s hike, lavender amongst the heather, of whisky by the fireside.”
- What was the last gift you gave someone?
“Sent my mum some flowers on Valentine’s day because I’m a big suck up!” (Like I said, this was done aaaages ago. I’m sure he’s sent gifts to him mummy since)
- What were you like in high school – nerdy, sporty, etc…?
“Nerdy, I guess, though I know that word can mean different things in different countries. I absolutely was not sporty. I was reserved and was daft enough to think that being short of stature meant I had to be short on life. I like to think I’ve grown up since then.”
- What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
“Taboo! Because I was hearing such amazing things and I’ve not been disappointed!” (I wonder how many box sets he’s watched since Taboo?)
- What do you want to be when you grow up?
“A full time creative person, if I can. It would be amazing to be part of the writing team for a major RPG game one day.”
- Describe the colour green to somebody who is blind.
“Green is a tough one. Green looks like how you feel when you’re sick or clammy; it’s mint ice cream and also mouldy growths on food. Green is that clinically clean smell of a hospital but also fresh cut grass. Green is life.”
- Who would win a fight between Frodo and Sam?
“Pre-ring Frodo would probably lose but mad-ring-bearing Frodo would slip it on and stab Sam. I’d like to think that Sam would be incapable of hurting Mr. Frodo no matter what happened.”
- A white rabbit hops through the door right now wearing a helmet. What does he say and why is he here?
“He says, ‘Excuse me, sir, but I need a hand getting this overly large human helmet off me head.’”
- What’s your favourite game, be it video, board or tabletop?
“Ahhh you’ve done it now. You’ve asked the impossible question. You’re getting the top 5 video games in no particular order….
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 2, World of Warcraft, Total War: Warhammer. Pokémon gets a shout out too.
Top board game is easily Risk (LOTR and GoT versions are great). I’d like to try out more board and/or table top games.”
- The last book you read was…?
“Last book I listened to was Good Omens by Gaiman and Pratchett. Chortling in the gym when you’re hogging the wilson machine draws angry eyes.” (At time of interrogation)
- Supercar, Superbike or Superboat, and why?
“Superboat, because I am a penchant for cruises with awesome buffets and relaxing travel. I’d like to think my Superboat would be one of these ships but ALL MINE.”
- Where is your preferred writing space?
“Wherever I am feeling most comfortable. I write a lot in my room but I go through phases of visiting a new coffee shop for a few weeks and then abandoning it for no discernible reason.”
- When’s your next book out?
“My second book, Veiled Intentions, just recently came out on February 10th” (Not so recently. Shame on me!)
- Do you have a question for me?
“Are you psycho analysing all our answers???”
JP: “I’m not at liberty to discuss that at this time.”
Well there we have the ramblings of a tortured soul, who writes about dragons in human form, demons, trolls and other such fantasies in his Dragon’s Blade series. If you like how Michael talks, you’ll like how he writes fantasy, so check it out on Goodreads, Amazon and follow him on Twitter, Facebook and on his website (also available on Audible!)
Apologies to Michael, the inquisition followers and the other authors who submitted to this series. I’m hopefully back on track with life now and will endeavor to post the rest regularly.
